Síntesis Parashat Miketz: Paró (el faraón) tiene dos enigmáticos
si y las interpretaciones que le dan no lo satisfacen. Yosef interpreta
interpreta que pronto habrán siete años de mucha abundancia, seguidos de siete
años de hambre. Aconseja a Paró diciendo que busque a un hombre sabio de
confianza para que en los años de abundancia prepare a todo el país para los
malos años. Paró ve en Yosef al espíritu de Dios y lo nombra virrey, para que
se encargue de todas las preparaciones necesarias.
Los Anusim de Hoy & José el Tzadik
-Justo-
La Parashá de
esta semana nos habla acerca de los hermanos de José que descienden a Egipto en
busca de alimento y se presentan delante de su hermano José a quien no
reconocen de inmediato. Ellos lo tienen por un Egipcio y él no se revela a
ellos desde el principio. Todo el incidente comenzó cuando sus hermanos lo
vendieron como esclavo y lo habían dado por muerto. Ellos nunca se pudieron
imaginar que lo encontrarían en Egipto muchos años mas tarde y mucho menos como
el Virrey de faraón. En la Parashá de la próxima semana José se revela a si
mismo ante ellos y les manifiesta que para él fue obvio que Dios quería las
cosas de esa manera para así colocar los recursos de Egipto a su disposición.
Los Anusim son
los descendientes de cientos de millares de Judíos de España y Portugal que
fueron "convertidos" o "conversos" en contra de su voluntad
al catolicismo durante la Inquisición Española y Portuguesa que duró
oficialmente entre 1300 hasta los años 1700. Todos ellos sufrieron mucho en
manos de nuestros enemigos por centurias, no solamente por el estigma de tener
sangre judía, sino también, porque el enemigo sabía que ellos guardaban un
pasado Judío. Se les llamó "marranos", literalmente "cerdos"
y se vieron obligados con frecuencia a casarse con otros que sólo tenían el
mismo pasado debido a este estigma. Aún más trágicamente, muchos de sus
hermanos no los reconocieron, creyendo de la misma manera de los hermanos de
José que los habían perdido para siempre.
Los
descendientes de estos Judíos que se vieron obligados a convertirse buscaron
refugio en toda América Latina y han mantenido muchas de las costumbres
transmitidas en secreto de generación en generación en sus familias. Hoy en día
millones de personas en América Latina pueden ser descendientes de estas
personas y un gran número de ellos tratan de ser reconocidos como Judíos y
que un camino sea creado para su retorno al judaísmo verdadero. Los
Anusim hoy en día se encuentran en una posición similar a José. Ellos
funcionaron durante quinientos años en la sociedad gentil (de Egipto) ocultando
su verdadera identidad, pero sabiendo muy bien dentro de ellos quienes eran
realmente. Se soñaba con impaciencia el día en que se reunieran con sus hermanos
y quizás incluso utilizar sus contactos para ayudarlos a ellos. Después de
haber vivido entre los no-Judíos ellos soñaron de tener algún sentido con todo
esto y utilizarlo para ayudar a sus hermanos a regresar al judaísmo con la
cabeza en alto. Hay una hermosa canción ladina de Pascua "¿Quién
sabe uno?" canción que comienza cada sección con las palabras
"Elohenu shebashamayim Dio mos lleve a Yerushalayim con la cara para
grande." Que el Dios que está en los cielos, nos lleve a Jerusalén con
nuestras cabezas en alto".
Muchos de los
Anusim tienen un gran número de José (s) y entre en sus familias. Esto se debe
a que estos dos personajes bíblicos fueron Judíos que han tenido que ocultar su
identidad pero al final su sufrimiento de alguna manera fue reivindicado por
utilizar sus conexiones para mejorar y salvar a su pueblo.
He pasado gran
parte de mi carrera como rabino tratando de alcanzar a estas personas. Me he
reunido con un gran número de ellos. He visitado sus hogares. He visto sus
lugares de reunión de toda América Latina. Me he reunido con sus ancianos
padres y abuelos y cada uno de estos encuentros me ha traído hasta las lágrimas
de dolor y alegría de ver que muchos de ellos tienen aún el fuego del judaísmo
quemándoles sus corazones. Mi propia historia personal es similar a la suya. Mi
familia practicó muchos de estos mismos rituales que más tarde fueron
identificados como rituales judíos. Estos rituales incluyen la práctica de la
iluminación de las velas en la clandestinidad, no comer en determinados días
del año cerca de Yom Kippur y el cálculo de estas fechas por el calendario
lunar. Hace poco vi un calendario que es mantenido de esta manera por una
anciana en la República Dominicana que marcó la fecha de Yom Kippur muy de
cerca a la nuestra. En una semana se me acercaron personas de toda América
Latina que claman por ser reconocidos como Judíos, pidiendo ayuda para la
adquisición de libros y materiales para oración e instrucción en la Torá, a fin
de que puedan regresar con pleno derecho al auténtico judaísmo.
Muchos de estos
mismos individuos se reúnen actualmente como grupos en sus hogares o en lugares
públicos porque no hay sinagogas en su zona o más comúnmente, porque las
sinagogas no les dan la bienvenida. He buscado los líderes de estas
organizaciones a rabinos y a presidentes de las sinagogas y he preguntado
por qué no se les permite asistir o participar? Su respuesta es que simplemente
no puedo creer que es verdad lo que me están diciendo. Algunos de los permiten
el ingreso a estas personas les dan un trato como si fueran gentiles que buscan
la conversión y proceden a rechazarlos, por lo menos tres veces. Otros muy
educadamente preguntan cómo puede ser posible que sean judíos si son
racialmente diferentes al resto de nosotros. Otros (muchos de ellos) hacen la
misma pregunta pero más bruscamente.
Yo les explico
que es un hecho histórico que los Judíos no siempre eran de color blanco. Les
digo que la Mishnah en Negaiim (Capítulo 2 Mishna 1), afirma que los Judíos no
son blancos como los "Germanim" o negros, como los
"kushim", pero son de color marrón "intermedios como el color de
boj (caja de madera)." También les explico que los Judíos españoles
escogieron mejor casarse con nativos de Africa o de las Américas en lugar de
casarse con sus enemigos españoles blancos, ya que encontraron una mayor
afinidad con este tipo de personas quien les dio la bienvenida y les dio
refugio porque había un opresor común. Otros simplemente los rechazan porque
tienen miedo que como hay tantos en espera las sinagogas se vean abrumados por
ellos. Se ha hecho muy poco para dar la bienvenida a los cripto-judíos modernos
a la vida judía y mucho ha sido hecho para rechazar total o lentamente su
inmersión. Mientras tanto, el Anusim sigue buscando el judaísmo por su propia
cuenta. Los registros genealógicos, e incluso los estudios de ADN.
Recientemente un importante hallazgo científico confirmó que el 20% de España y
Portugal, los ciudadanos de hoy en día tienen ascendencia judía. El Anusim
sigue apareciendo en todo el mundo imparable en los números, independientemente
de nuestra falta de divulgación a ellos o nuestro rechazo. Es como si un shofar
místico hubiera sido soplado y sólo ellos habían oído su llamado.
Por desgracia,
la razón de la existencia de los Anusim se encuentra enterrada en la historia
de la Inquisición y es a menudo ignorada por los historiadores, aún por
historiadores judíos . Esto juega un papel fundamental en las exploraciones y
asentamientos de las Américas y es la clave para la comprensión de la historia

podamos crecer y prosperar juntos.
Ayudar a los
Anusim a retornar al judaísmo es un gran mitzvá. Es la clásica "pidyon
shvuyim" -redención de los cautivos- que nuestros rabinos escribieron que
era tan importante que cualquier regla podía ser violada en cumplimiento de
dicha mitzvá. Pero también ello podría lograr grandes cosas para nosotros. (1)
Si el 20% de los ciudadanos de España y de Portugal regresara al judaísmo esto
sería un aumento de la población judía de 11 millones; (2) Revitalizaría la
vida judía en todo el mundo por el testimonio que el espíritu judío es
imparable. Jóvenes Judíos podrían experimentar una emocional y vibrante
cultura judía que los podría reenganchar a la vida judía. (3) Si el
número estimado conservador de 3-4 millones de personas en las Américas de
ascendencia judía regresara al judaísmo nuestros números podrían reforzar enormemente
a las naciones en que la presencia judía es tan importante. Los musulmanes hoy
en día hacen un gran trabajo de divulgación para convertir en masa a toda
una tribu en Venezuela llamada los indios Wayuu. Lo hacen porque saben
que estas regiones son ricas en recursos naturales y humanos y, por supuesto,
también están en el juego político en el teatro de la opinión mundial. (4)
Nuestra divulgación con los Anusim es un testimonio a los demás que no somos
racistas. Que somos multirracial, multicultural y multilingüe y personas
que vibran. Que lo que nos une no es la raza sino el credo - que es una
creencia en la Torá y sus enseñanzas. (5) Incluso si no tenemos éxito en hacer
volver los descendientes de los Anusim a la vida judía plena, queremos hacer un
gran número de amigos en todo el mundo, que históricamente podrían
identificarse como judíos y, por tanto, sería de apoyo a Israel y al
mundo judío en general .
Tal vez es hora
de que se les permita manifestarse, y para nosotros sus hermanos a darles una
bienvenida a casa. La difícil situación de José y sus hermanos todavía nos
habla hoy, pidiéndonos que hagamos lo correcto, independientemente de todas las
buenas razones dadas antes. Que les ayudemos a volver a nosotros y se revelan a
nosotros y que los aceptemos porque es lo correcto para responder a la llamada
de los dolores del alma y los corazones de nuestros hermanos. Qué impresionante
reunión sería en una escala global si pudiéramos recrear la unión de José y sus
hermanos.

In
this week’s parsha Joseph’s brothers come into Egypt looking for food and
appear before their own brother Joseph whom they do not recognize. They mistook
him for an Egyptian and he did not reveal himself to them at first. The whole
incident began when his brothers sold him into slavery and assumed him lost.
They could never imagine that he would be found in Egypt so many years later
and even more unlikely as a Viceroy to Pharaoh. In next week’s parsha he
reveals himself and tells them that it was obvious to him that God had wanted
it that way so that he could place the resources of Egypt at their disposal.
The Anusim are the descendants of
hundreds of thousands of Jews from Spain and Portugal who were converted
against their will to Catholicism during the Spanish and Portuguese
Inquisitions 1300’s – 1700’s. They suffered greatly at the hands of our enemies
for centuries not only because of the stigma of having Jewish blood but also
because the enemy knew that they secretly held onto some of their Jewish past.
They were called “marranos” literally pigs and were forced quite often to marry
only others that had the same past due to this stigma. Even more tragically,
many of their brothers did not recognize them, believing like Joseph’s brothers
that they had lost them forever.
The descendants of these Jews who were
forced to convert sought refuge all over Latin America and have maintained many
of the customs passed down secretly from generation to generation in their
families. Today millions of people in Latin America may be descended from these
individuals and a great number of them seek to be recognized as Jews and that a path be created for their return to full
fledged Judaism. The Anusim today are in a similar position to Joseph. They
functioned for five hundred years in the gentile (Egyptian?) society hiding
their true identity but knowing full well inside who they really were. They
anxiously dreamed of the day when they would be reunited with their brothers
and perhaps even using their contacts to help them. Having lived among non-Jews
they dreamed of somehow making sense of all of this by using it to help their
brothers and return to Judaism with their heads held high. There is a beautiful
ladino Passover song to the “Who knows one” song which begins each section with
the words “Elohenu shebashamayim Dio mos lleve a yerushalayim con la cara para
grande.” May God who is in heaven, take us to Jerusalem with our heads held
high.”
Many of the Anusim have a great number of
Jose(s) and Esthers in their families. This is because both of these biblical
characters were Jews who had to hide their identities but in the end their
suffering was somehow vindicated by using their connections to uplift and save
their people.
I have spent much of my career as a Rabbi
reaching out to these individuals. I have met a great number of them. I have
visited their homes. I have seen their gathering places throughout Latin
America. I have met their elderly parents and grandparents and each of these
encounters has brought me to tears of pain and joy seeing that so many of them
have the fire of Judaism still burning bright in their hearts. My own personal
history is similar to theirs. My family practiced many of these same rituals
which we later identified as Jewish rituals. These rituals include the practice
of lighting candles in hiding, not eating on certain days of the year near Yom
Kippur and calculating these dates by the lunar calendar. I recently saw a
calendar being maintained this way on her own by an elderly woman in Dominican
Republic which marked the date of Yom Kippur very closely to ours. On a weekly
basis I am approached by individuals from all over Latin America who are
clamoring for recognition as Jews, asking for help acquiring books and prayer
materials and Torah instruction, so they can return to full fledged authentic Judaism.
Many of these very same individuals now
meet as groups in homes or public places because there are no synagogues in their area
or more commonly because the synagogues will not welcome them. I have sought
out the leaders of these organizations, Rabbis and synagogue Presidents, and
have asked why they won’t allow them to attend or participate? Their response
is that they simply cannot believe that it’s true what they are saying. Some
who do welcome these individuals treat them as if they were gentiles seeking
conversion and proceed to reject them at least three times. Others have
politely asked how it could be that if they are Jewish that they are racial
different than the rest of us. Others (too many of them) ask this question
rudely.
I explain that it is a historical fact
that Jews were not always white. I tell them of the Mishnah in Negaiim (Chapter
2 Mishna 1) which asserts that Jews are not white like the “Germanim” or black
like the “kushim” but are brown “intermediate like the color of boxwood.” I
also explain that Spanish Jews were most likely to marry African’s or natives
in the Americas rather than marrying their white enemies they found greater
kinship with these people who welcomed them and gave them sanctuary because
they had a common oppressor. Others simply reject them because they are afraid
that there are so many that the synagogues will become overwhelmed by them. There
has been very little done to welcome the modern crypto-Jews to Jewish life and
much has been done to reject them outright or slow their immersion. Meanwhile
the Anusim continue to seek Judaism on their own. Genealogical records and even
DNA studies. Recently a major scientific finding confirmed that 20% of Spain
and Portugal’s citizens today have Jewish ancestry. The Anusim continue to
emerge all over the world in unstoppable numbers regardless of our lack of
outreach to them or our rejection. It is as if a mystical shofar was blown and
only they had heard its call.
Unfortunately, the reason for the
existence of the Anusim lies buried in the history of the Inquisition which is
often ignored by historians including Jewish historians. It plays a key role in
the explorations and settlements of the Americas and is key to understanding
the history of the entire Western Hemisphere but it is ignored and hidden with
the hidden Jews. I often wonder if this will also occur with holocaust memory
500 years from now. The Anusim speak to us about our history but alas we have
forgotten it ourselves.
When they speak to me I usually tell them
three things; first of all “you are not alone there are thousands if not
millions of people like you all over the world seeking Judaism seeking the ways
of their ancestors”, secondly “I believe you. Your testimony of survival
against all odds does not bring us shame rather it brings great pride that the
Jewish spirit always survives”, and thirdly, “we want you back.” Please study,
please practice please formalize your return to us and marry and have children
within our community so that we can grow and prosper together.
Helping the Anusim return to Judaism is a
great mitzvah. It is the classical “pidyon shvuyim” redemption of the captives
which our Rabbis wrote was so important that any law could be violated in
pursuance of. But it could also accomplish great things for us. (1) If 20% of
the citizens of Spain and Portugal returned to Judaism this would be an
increase in the Jewish population by 11 million (2) It could reinvigorate
Jewish life worldwide by testifying that the Jewish sprit is unstoppable. Young
Jews could experience an emotional and vibrant Jewish culture that could
reengage them in Jewish life. (3) If the conservatively estimated number of 3-4
million people in the Americas of Jewish ancestry returned to Judaism our
numbers would vastly be reinforced in nations where a Jewish presence is so
important. Muslims are today making a great outreach to potential converts all
over Latin America mass converting an entire tribe in Venezuela called the
Wayuu Indians. They do this because they know that these regions are rich in
natural and human resources and of course are also in play politically on the
theater of world opinion. (4) Our outreach to the Anusim is a testimony to
others that we are not racist. That we are a multiracial, multicultural and
multilingual and vibrant people. That what unites us is not race but creed -
that is a belief in the Torah and its teachings. (5) Even if we were
unsuccessful at returning the descendants of the Anusim to full Jewish life, we
would make a large number of friends all over the world who would identify as
historically Jewish and therefore would be supportive of Israel and world Jewry
in general.
Perhaps it is time to allow them to
reveal themselves, and for us their brothers to actively welcome them home. The
plight of Joseph and his brothers still speaks to us today, begging us to do
the right thing irrespective of all of the good reasons given before. That we
help them return to us and reveal themselves to us and that we embrace them
because it’s the right thing to do to answer the call of the pangs of the soul
and the hearts of our brothers. What an awesome reunion it would be on a global
scale if we could recreate the union of Joseph and his brothers.
